Hiking is a fun way to get some good exercise and enjoy the outdoors with friends or family. But failure to bring along some key essentials could result in you and your group’s hike becoming a bad experience, to say the least.
But how do you know what items to bring along with you on your hike? And what are some of the items you might not think are important for a day hike, but actually are?
If you’re asking yourself these kinds of questions, wonder no longer, because we’re here to help!
In this article, we’ll give you 10 must-have items for any day hike so that you and your group can have the best time possible.
Now then, let’s get started!
1. A Comfortable Hiking Backpack
Going on an adventure in the woods is always a great time, but it can quickly be ruined with a bad backpack that causes pain or discomfort mere moments into your trip.
So first and foremost, before you step foot on any hiking trails, you’re going to want to invest in a high-quality backpack, preferably one specifically designed for hiking. It’s important to get something that is well made and comfortable to wear so that you can enjoy your experience.
2. A Water Bottle and Other Hydration AccessoriesÂ
Once you have the perfect hiking backpack, you’re ready to start putting other items into it.
Obviously, staying hydrated is a key factor in having an enjoyable hike. You’ll want to make sure you have an insulated bottle filled with cold water before venturing out into the great outdoors.
If you want to take things up a notch, hydration packs are a great way to stay cool and hydrated on longer hikes. It’s also not a bad idea start hydrating heavily a day or two before your trip, so you’re not playing catchup during your hike.
3. Some Healthy Snacks
Having healthy snacks to chow on during your hike can help keep your energy levels high so you can spend more time enjoying yourself and avoid those mid-day hunger pangs.
Again, make sure you’re making healthy choices when deciding what snacks to pack. Too much sugar on the trails can completely ruin your day, and your hike, which is not ideal.
4. Sunscreen
Dealing with the sun is a huge part of any outdoor adventure, including hiking. That’s why it’s important to pack sunscreen and actually use it on any daytime hike, regardless of the weather.
Even if it’s a bit cloudy out, sunscreen is a must and should be one of the items in your backpack before you leave for the trails.
5. Bug Spray
If you’re going to be spending time in the woods, you’re undoubtedly going to come across some insects and creatures along the way.
That’s why bug spray should be on every hiker’s packing list. It’s rather light to carry, doesn’t take up much room, and can prevent the hike from becoming unpleasant for everyone involved.
6. A First Aid Kit
Accidents happen. If you’re going to be hiking a rough and rugged trail, you or someone in your party could slip and fall at any time. A standard first aid kit is another small item that could come in handy should any minor cuts or scrapes occur.
7. A Flashlight
Obviously, if you’re planning a nighttime stroll through the woods, a flashlight is a no brainer. But even if you’re only going to be out for a few hours during the daylight, it’s not a bad idea to have a flashlight in your bag.
You never know when some dark clouds, or an area on the trail with lots of tree cover, could lead to things getting a little dark (and dangerous) on the trails.
8. A Knife or Utility Tool
A pocket knife, or a Swiss army knife, is invaluable for any hiking trip. You’d be surprised, even on the simplest of trails, how often you’ll need to cut something out of your way to advance on the trail. Having a good knife with you will ensure you’re ready for that situation, or others where a knife would be of use.Â
9. Maps and GuidesÂ
It goes without saying that having maps detailing the area you plan to hike is important, assuming you don’t want to get lost on your hiking trip.
Once you have the maps, however, you want to ensure that they’ll be safe and secure during the trip. A small waterproof case, to hold your maps and other valuables like your cell phone and wallet, is a good idea, too.
10. A Compass
Finally, a compass is the last absolute must for any hiking trip. The ability to easily discover which direction is east and which is west can prevent you from getting seriously lost in the woods.
It may sound a bit old school, but you never know when you’ll need one on the trails, not to mention they’re lightweight and don’t take up any space in your bag.

Now that you know what items are essential for any day hike, you’re ready to hit the trails!
