1) Brush your teeth properly
Brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice per day is highly essential to maintaining your dental health. You should be brushing ideally with an electric toothbrush, once in the morning and once at night, to keep them feeling and looking clean. Should you forget to brush them anytime, you can always do at as soon as you remember.
However, it’s important to try and create a regular regime. Brushing right to the back of your mouth is also important. It’s easy to miss areas around the molars (back teeth) and so you should be extra careful to make sure these parts are covered too.
2) Invest in a good toothpaste
Having a good toothpaste can make your teeth feel cleaner and your breath smell fresher. Using a toothpaste containing fluoride is usually recommended. It’s up to you what flavour you go for, but the majority of pastes come in mint to help your breath smell sweet and fresh.
If you clean your teeth and they still feel a little fuzzy, it might be because you haven’t brushed them properly or it might be that your toothpaste isn’t working for you. If this is the case, simply try out another type and brush for longer next time.
3) Floss regularly
It’s easy to forget to floss in the morning before heading out to work, and in the evening when you’re tired – you just want to leave or go to bed without the hassle of pulling tape between your teeth.
Whilst you don’t necessarily need to floss all the time, it is good to remember at least a few times a week. Food can get stuck between the teeth easily, and flossing it out prevents it from rotting between your teeth. This could cause bad breath, or in worse cases, gum problems.
4) Use mouthwash
Like toothpaste, mouthwash helps to keep your mouth clean, disinfected, and fresh-smelling. Whilst not essential for the daily dental regime, it can be a good addition once every so often.
Of course, if you have been told you use mouthwash by your dentist or doctor, then you should follow their instructions for use.
5) Drink plenty of water
Drinking lots of water helps to clear the toxins out of the body and keeps you generally healthy. Your oral health also benefits from staying hydrated.
Bad breath and other oral issues can be linked to your level of water intake, so drinking those eight glasses of water a day is important.
6) Eat healthily
Eating healthily also has an effect on your dental health. Limiting the amount of sugary and acidic foods you eat will help keep your teeth strong and healthy.
Eating foods high in fibre will help improve your overall health and subsequently, your oral health.
7) See your dentist regularly
Taking regular trips to the dentist is important. You should ideally visit your dentist twice every year.
Dentists are there to check for any problems as they arise to prevent them worsening, and to make suggestions on how you could improve your brushing technique and general oral hygiene.
