How To Find The Right Bathtub And Install It Properly

Whether you are adding a bathroom to your home, or just giving an existing bathroom an upgrade, adding a new bathtub is one way to help make a space come alive. While there are facelift options, sometimes a new tub is what you need. Not everyone inherently knows how to install a bathtub, but that is okay because, at Angi, formerly known as Angie’s List, you’ll get many qualified bathroom contractors in your area to choose from to help your upgrades look great.

Choosing The Right Bathtub For You

Before starting your bathtub installation project, you’ll need to find the bathtub you want, and make sure it is a good fit for your bathroom. There are several types of tubs that can be installed and fit a variety of needs. Some of the more popular types of tubs include:

  • The Alcove- The classic style of tub that is installed against a wall, and often includes a shower in order to be efficient with space.
  • Corner Tub — Installed in the corner with more of a ledge than an alcove. It usually does not include a shower.
  • Freestanding Tub — Many of these are in the clawfoot style, but they don’t have to be. Whether classic or modern, they bring a sense of elegance.
  • Whirlpool (Jetted) Tubs — With these, you can enjoy hydrotherapy in the comfort of your own home and get a relaxing massage while taking a bath.
  • Walk-in tubs – If mobility has started to become an issue, it’s possible to have a walk-in tub installed. These allow you to open a door and walk into your bath, rather than climbing over the edge. Often these include features like extra grab bars, a seat, and jets to soothe sore muscles.

How To Install A Bathtub

Once you know what type of bathtub you want, you can move on to the bathtub installation.

  • First, you will want to make sure your bathtub will fit in your bathroom. The place where your bathtub will sit needs to be properly level. This is not a given, but using a two-by-four is a good way to make sure the area is properly prepared.
  • Next, you will need to assure that the drain and p-trap are properly prepared for your new tub. The drain opening needs to be correctly positioned.
  • Make sure the tub has proper back support. This can be done by putting a large piece of wood against the tub’s back overhang. This needs to be attached to the studs in the wall to assure that the tub is secure.
  • Add foam to the subfloor before installation. Bathtubs are heavy, so adding foam to the subfloor will add that extra support you need.
  • Move the tub into place, install the rubber gasket, and test for leaks. In order to be sure that the tub has been properly installed, you will need to fill it with water and leave it for a half-hour before draining. Be sure to correct any problems before using the tub on a regular basis. The better quality you have on your bathtub installation, the better the tub will function for you and your family.

If you aren’t used to the task of installing a tub, it can be a bit daunting. Any misstep can be daunting and can cause expensive flooding or other damage to your property. If this isn’t a chance you want to take, calling Angi to help you find a bathroom contractor to help could be the right move. You could let the contractor in from the start, or check out the space yourself ahead of time to make sure you are choosing the right tub. If you haven’t made up your mind, your contractor can help give you ideas that will work best for your home.
