How to Identify a Dead Tree in Your Yard

In these days of rampant global COVID-19, decks look like they could use regular maintenance so they don’t fall. It may be hard to know what to look for while maintaining your patio.

Perhaps you’re trying to decide whether it’s time to have a tree removed and are wondering how to know for sure—wondering, too, whether you need a tree removal service.

You’re not alone! Read on for what to look for if you think you have a dead tree in your yard.

Understand the Differences between a Healthy and a Dead Tree

Identify a Dead Tree

Healthy trees are vibrant and alive with greenery, blooms, and bird activity. Conversely, dead trees are stark, obvious, and uninteresting. To identify a dead tree in your yard, look for signs such as the absence of foliage, any evidence of bark falling off, discoloration, and a lack of leaves or flowers.

Additionally, dead trees may show signs of rot, fungus, and bug infestations. Birds may also stop frequenting it as there will be fewer branches and foliage to roost in. Also, observe if the bark seems dry and brittle compared to a healthy tree and note any signs of a dying tree.

Finally, identify the type of tree as some species, such as aspen and birch, will naturally show signs of age, contributing to identifying a dead tree.

Inspect the Tree’s Leaves and Bark

Wilted, yellowing, or missing leaves suggest the tree is unhealthy. Also, check the tree’s bark for discoloration or signs of distress, such as visible insect damage, furrows, or deep gouges. If the bark does not appear healthy, the tree could die.

Look for dead branches that could have broken off due to wind or disease. These broken branches will be brittle and dry and may lack green or fresh foliage.

Pay Attention to the Soil and Water

Look for signs of soil dryness around the base of the tree. The tree may die from dehydration if the soil is cracked, dehydrated, and moist. If there is standing water around the tree, it could be a sign of root rot or another waterborne fungus.

Also, inspect the tree for fungus on the trunk or limbs, which can indicate disease or infestation. The insects may leave sawdust and boreholes in the wood. The bark will be loose and peeling. If broken branches and cracked limbs are missing bark, these are additional indicators.

If a tree appears to be otherwise healthy, but the foliage is discolored, and the leaves are falling off, suspect insect infestations. The tree should be examined thoroughly for external signs of lesions and decay. If you suspect signs that the tree is dying, look for dead tree removal services.

Understanding How to Identify a Dead Tree

Dead trees can be hazardous for your yard, so make sure to check your trees regularly for signs of damage or decline. Doing so can help you keep your yard safe and prevent damage caused by a dead tree. If you think you may have a dead tree in your yard, an arborist can help you confirm it.
