How To Measure Driveshaft Length
By far the easiest way of measuring a driveshaft is to take off the existing driveshaft and use them as an example, or you can send them into the performance shop and they will take the measurements of the example.
What if you are building a race car from scratch and you don’t have an example driveshaft to use? Well, that’s where knowing what to look out for below and what to measure comes in handy.
To start with, if your vehicle isn’t high enough, jack up the vehicle to a comfortable height. To measure, if your vehicle has a flange type driveshaft simply measure the distance between the two flanges or if your driveshaft type slides into the transmission on the output shaft in the front and bolts on the rear, the measurement you will need is from the end of the driveshaft to the centerline of the U-joint.
For added assurance, while you are under the vehicle, you can take pictures of the back end of the transmission as well as the differential on the rear axle, if your vehicle is equipped with one.
