AI-Infused Real-Time Navigation
Several new Toyota vehicles have onboard computers that you can use for navigation. When you use them, they’re infused with AI, and that artificial intelligence can help you as you try to get where you’re going as quickly as possible.
The AI has access to information regarding where the car is at all times. It also knows what traffic conditions are going to be like at that time of day in that particular locale.
The AI can make recommendations regarding what route you should take in real-time. It can often save you time if you’re trying to make it to an appointment and you’re running a little late.
JapanTaxi
The company also came out with a pilot program called JapanTaxi recently. It’s an initiative that currently only runs in Tokyo, but if it’s successful, it could expand to other countries and cities.
The JapanTaxi program uses AI that taxi drivers can access to figure out where they should go at particular times so that they can more likely meet customer demand. The AI should be able to identify places where the taxi drivers are more likely to get fares based on many factors that the AI processes very rapidly.
Teammate
The Teammate program is another one that is helping the Toyota company stay on the cutting edge of AI technology. It is an automated driving system that meets the qualifications for “Level 2,” as it is known in the self-driving car market.
Level 2 signifies that the vehicle can do self-driving with some degree of safety and dependability. Level 2 still means the program needs some work. However, it’s as close to a completely safe version of a self-driving car as any vehicle company has reached up to this point.
Level 2 is a step up from where Toyota and any other company were a few years ago, but they must still continue this testing program before hopefully reaching Level 5. That’s the level at which self-driving cars will be available for purchase by the consumer market. At the moment, Teammate can do some self-driving and parking tasks, but the human driver in the car must still be there for some assistance.
All of this is exciting new tech, though some of it is not being mass-produced yet. You can be certain that in the very near future, AI will be more in use in all of Toyota’s mass-market vehicles.
