Whether it’s a V-6 or a turbocharged inline-four you’re looking for, you’ve got the option with both off-roaders. But when comparing the 2021 Jeep Wrangler vs Ford Bronco, which vehicle has a higher-performing standard and optional engines?
The Jeep Wrangler’s well-known Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 has 260 lb-ft of torque and 285 horsepower.
Your optional engine here is a turbo 2.0-liter 4 which actually goes back in horsepower, giving you 270. However, it increases in torque, offering 295 lb-ft. Or you could choose the ultimate 2.0-liter diesel with 442 lb-ft of torque, 260 ponies, and a lot of bottom-end grunt.
The Ford Bronco is fitted with a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-4 with a projected 310 lb-ft of torque and 270 horsepower, just like the Ford Ranger.
Looking at the optional engine you’re going to have a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 that is probably going to give you 410 lb-ft of torque and 310 horsepower. But if you get one of the top 3 trims, this will be standard for you.
Did you know that overall, you won’t get better miles-per-gallon with automatic vehicles these days? Off-road is different, but you might want to use a car buying app to decide. It really depends on how you handle and drive it.
Both Wranglers and Broncos offer a do-it-yourself gearbox with their base engines (turbo-4). An 8-speed option is available with the Wrangler, but the Bronco has improved its double-digit gearbox since the 2021 model was born.
The axles find common ground with both the Bronco and Wrangler, using Dana-supplied units in the front and rear. Dependent on trim, both are available with electronic locking differentials at both ends.
Your standard Jeep Wrangler has a 3.45:1 gearbox, but the Wrangler Rubicon (off-road supreme) is equipped with a 4:10.1 ratio. Diesel Jeeps give you a 3.73:1. By the way, unlike Bronco, you’ve got split-differential as an option here (on Wranglers without locking differentials).
Transfer cases are a lot alike on the Wranglers. You’ve got 2:72.1 low-range on the Sahara and the Sport. But the unit on the Rubicon is stronger, getting 4.00.1 for superior creeping.
With your Wrangler Sahara, you’ve got the same option of the same low range and full-time all-wheel drive, just like the Bronco.
You get 4 final-drive ratios if you want them. When you pick the manual you’ll get one at 4.46:1 with the exception of the Badlands model which has 4.70:1 gearing. The Bronco does lack the split-differential.
If you pick the automatic you’ll get two more. the Base, Outer Banks, and Big Bend models have 3:73.1. Badlands and Black Diamond models give you a 10-speed with 4:46:1. Looking at the Sasquatch package, you’ve got gears with 4:70:1 ratios.
Your 2021 Ford Bronco only has two transfer cases, while Wrangler has three. All options carry an electromechanical transfer case bringing you 4 Auto. With this activated, you can leave it in the 4-wheel-drive mode without binding your axles on the road.
Let’s Drive the 2021 Ford Bronco!
Motortrend’s experiences riding in the new 2021 Ford Bronco are here at last. It did great over rocks, stones, and water holes. As they braced for impact, they were surprised at how minimal it was, thanks to the Blistein shocks.
More heat is taken and given with these shocks, but having exterior reservoirs and monotube dampers, off-road performance is improved. Cornering is easier in the 2-door Bronco compared to the 4-door.
Let’s Drive the 2021 Jeep Wrangler!
The Rubicon 392 is superior to other Wranglers because it has 33-inch tires and is equipped with the best off-road gear they offer. As far as speed, you can get to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.
Motortrend thoroughly enjoyed their driving experience with the new Wrangler. Rubicon 392 has aluminum monotube Fox shocks. Just off idle, 75% of its peak torque is available to use. This vehicle is more than capable to crawl up obstacles.
When we compare Ford Bronco vs Jeep Wrangler vs Land Rover Defender, the Defender is more expensive and is more upmarket. And, in the battle between Jeep Wrangler 392 vs Ford Bronco, Wrangler wins for its powerful 6.4-liter V8 Hemi.
Which Will It Be?
Comparing Jeep Wrangler vs Ford Bronco is tough, just like the off-roaders themselves. Take each one for a test drive and listen to your gut. Both offer great performance and a lot of fun.
For us, the Bronco wins with its luxury leather interior option and more creature comforts like tube steps. We want a Bronco with the Sasquatch package, which has perfect 35-inch mud tires on 17-inch wheels.
