Job Responsibilities

The Education Specialist conducts individual and group sessions for academic, college, career and personal guidance. Works with target high school, appropriate college faculty/staff, parents, institutions of higher education, area agencies and area TRIO programs to facilitate services and activities with an emphasis on math and science that can lead to students’ high school graduation and matriculation into and graduation from college. Maintains accurate records concerning program activities and student academic progress.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides academic support services and assessments to participants at the target schools.
  2. Plans and implements educational / cultural enrichment activities.
  3. Develops an individualized educational plan for each participant to meet their academic plans, including mandatory core courses.
  4. Provides support for participants in academic, career, social and personal areas.
  5. This position is responsible for recruiting students from the projects’ target school and tracking progress for an assigned group of students.
  6. Assesses each participant’s academic skills.
  7. Monitors and follows-up participant’s academic progress.
  8. Maintains accurate records concerning program activities and student academic progress.
  9. Assists in the supervision of the summer tutorial staff.
  10. Consistently and dependably attends work, activities, and functions as scheduled or assigned.

Requirements

  1. Experience working with students who are first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities.
  2. Ability to adhere to federal and College policies and procedures.
  3. Knowledge of youthful behavior and culture.
  4. Knowledge of multi-cultural differences and challenges and ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures.
  5. Knowledge of MS Office software and Windows systems.
  6. Proficient planning and organizational skills; managing and prioritizing multiple tasks.
  7. Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  8. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including excellent grammar, spelling and editing skills.
  9. Skilled in human relations and diplomacy.
  10. Ability to communicate with people of all ages.
  11. Ability to understand parental concerns for students.
  12. Ability to evaluate programs and participants.
  13. Ability to demonstrate cooperative and professional demeanor, displaying patience and understanding in stressful situations.
  14. Ability to work successfully with minimal supervision in a team-oriented environment.
  15. Ability to use various office equipment including, but not limited to: computer, telephone, copier, scanner, and fax machine.
  16. Ability to travel throughout the Omaha community to target high school and community agencies.
  17. Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.

Required Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field with two (2) years of experience assisting middle and high school students with college preparation, while supervising a TRIO or related program consisting of a student population with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

At least one (1) year assisting participants and parents/legal guardians regarding college admissions and financial aid.

Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience considered.
