Off-Campus Student Housing - the Top 5 Things to Consider

If you’re in college or attendind university, chances are that you may be exploring housing options for the school year. While many first-year college students choose (or may be required to choose) the dorm life, second-year and up students have more freedom when it comes to deciding their housing situations. One of their options is off-campus student housing. Not only is it a preferred choice for upperclassmen, but it’s one that can definitely benefit you. However, before beginning your search or signing that lease, it is important to consider a few things.

1.        Pick Your Roommates

First thing first, will you have any roommates living with you? It is important to establish this ahead of time and plan the rest of the process together so that you’re all pleased with the living situation. Determine how many roommates you will have. They don’t always have to be close friends, but it is a good idea for them to have the same or similar interests as you.

If you choose to go about your living situation on your own, that gives you more freedom; however, living with at least one roommate can help you lower the cost of your expenses and even rent.

2.        Establish a Budget

Establishing a budget is next on the list when considering off-campus Athens student housing because this will determine where to look and what to look at. This budget should include monthly rent, utilities, parking fees, pet fees, and security deposits. The price of all of these things may vary by location, so once you establish a range, you will be able to filter your search and ask all the right questions.

3.        Consider the Distance and Commute

Living off-campus means that you will need to commute to your college or university. Make sure to look for properties within close proximity to the school if you find the commute to be too much. Consider how often you will be traveling to and from classes along with the times that you will be commuting. Traffic is also a factor here, so make sure to know the peak times in the area. If you have a job, make sure that your housing choice is located in a convenient place so that you can get to and from work easily.

4.        Consider the Amenities That May Be Included

One of the benefits of living off-campus in Athens student housing is the amenities that may be included. Be sure to check with the rental or leasing office before signing the paperwork to know what is included in your agreement. Some of these amenities your campus may already offer you access to just for being a student; however, having them in your own off-campus housing makes them easier to get to. It also provides you with options – which many students these days like.

Amenities can range from laundry facilities – they can either be shared by the community or located within your own housing, fitness centers, and even full-sized kitchens. Some student housing also comes either fully or semi-furnished, which can end up saving you money on furniture.

5.        Security of the Building

Safety is also important, and when exploring your off-campus property options, it is crucial for you to ask these kinds of questions. When was the last time the locks were changed? Typically, they should be changed anytime a tenant moves out and before the new one moves in.

It is also important to consider how people enter and exit the building. Common ways are with fob technology, scan cards, or specific keys. Knowing this information can help you make a proper decision about where to live. For those who prefer ground floor housing, it is recommended that they ensure the security of the building because of the closer proximity to the front door.

Living on your own is a big step, but it definitely comes with a lot of perks. It can save you money and provide you with a lot more freedom than you had before. Make sure to look into your options with your college or university ahead of time so that you’re aware of rules regarding off-campus housing situations.
