How Did the Opioid Crisis Come About?

Late in the 1990s, the pharmaceutical companies assured the medical community that patients were not at risk for developing an addiction to opioid pain relievers. Healthcare providers began prescribing opioid-containing medications for pain relief.

People began to misuse the medications. Soon, it became evident that it was, in fact, highly addictive. By then, it was too late for many people. They were already suffering from opioid addiction.

Recent Opioid Treatment Approaches

Since the 1990s, the medical community has been working to treat people addicted to opioids. Several different approaches and combinations of treatments have been employed.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This strategy uses the theory that learning processes play a role in the development of behavior patterns like drug abuse. With CBT, the individual learns to identify and change problematic behaviors.

This treatment works on enhancing self-control through the development of effective coping strategies. They explore the positive and negative outcomes that result from drug use. The therapist helps the patient learn ways to cope with cravings and avoid triggers.

Medications. The FDA has approved 3 medications for the use in treating opioid use disorder. These medications include methadone, buprenorphine, and extended-release naltrexone.

All three of these medications help to normalize the brain structure and function. They work to decrease withdrawal symptoms, opioid cravings, and your response to future drug use. The use of these medications has shown to decrease the incidence of overdose and other causes of premature death.
