Every now and then, a homeowner feels the need to give their house a new life by refurbishing and changing almost everything. Or maybe you may be moving to a different state, and you don’t want to move with your old stuff. While selling and giving away your old stuff is usually the way to go when refurbishing, some things like mattresses are not ideal for sale, especially if they are old. In this guide, we take a look at five ways you can dispose off your mattress legally.
1. Make a donation
If the mattress is still in good condition with no apparent stains, bugs, and broken parts, you can donate it to a charity organization. You can search for charitable organizations if you don’t know where to donate your mattress and get a donation receipt. Some of the organizations that you can contact include Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and Donation Town. Find out if they can pick up the mattress or you have to deliver it to them. Alternatively, you can contact local church groups or local children’s home to donate directly.
2. Put it up for sale
Sometimes, you may be disposing off a new mattress because you are moving to a new state. In such a situation you can choose to sell the mattress instead of giving it away, so you have some cash to buy a new one. The best avenues to sell items include online sales like social media, having a yard sale, or simply spreading the word to friends.
3. How about recycle
Did you know that approximately 7.5 million mattresses are thrown away annually? This is a huge figure that can cause adverse effects on the environment. Recycling is one of the best ways to ensure your mattress does not become a statistic ruining our world. Find out if your state has a recycling plant and take them the mattress. The mattress doesn’t have to be in perfect condition to be recycled, but recycling plants don’t accept things that are highly soiled, stained, or have bedbugs.
4. Take it to the Tip
If your mattress is really old, torn or soiled, you might need to throw it away. Contrary to popular belief, you can’t just place a mattress next to your trash bag on trash day because doing so will cause serious problems with the city council. Load your mattress in your car and deliver it to the local Tip. This is not very environmentally friendly, but sometimes you may have no option. Alternatively, you can contact your city council or any waste disposal service that will come and collect the mattress for a fee.
5. Reuse it into something else
If you are good with your hands, you can turn your old mattress into something else. There are so many components found in a mattress, including box spring, wood, and foam. Separate all those parts and use them individually for other things. Foam can be used to make pillows, and you can use the wood for a fire.
As you consider any of these tips of disposing off a mattress, make sure to check your local laws regarding the same, so you don’t get into trouble.
