In the United States, the printing industry produced around $81.7 billion gross output in 2018. This shows just how big the printing industry is.

Many of us have used printers before, either at work or at home to print out papers. Direct to garment (DTG) printing process is no different from this.

Recently, DTG printers are used as alternatives to screen printing, depending on the preferences of the business and their customers.

Here is everything you should know about DTG printing.

How It Works

A particular printer is used in DTG printing to apply water-based ink to the fabric using ink-jet technology directly. The fibers then absorb the ink and create your custom logo or design.

DTG printing is used in garments that are 100% cotton. This is because only cotton fibers can absorb water-based ink.

Step-by-Step Guide

You need to first come up with a design. The software in graphic design, such as InDesign and Photoshop, are used in creating custom designs or corporate logos.

Second, after completing your design, send it to the printer. In the DTG machine, the print driver gives instructions to the device on what it’s supposed to print.

Thirdly, use a pretreating machine before printing the garment to ensure it is ready.  Pretreating your clothing takes less than a minute.

After the pretreating process, the fabric should be dried. This usually takes around 30 seconds using a heat press set with a temperature of 330 degrees Fahrenheit.

Now that your garment is ready for printing, position it on the DTG printer’s plate, and use a hoop to lock it into place.

Ensure that your design is already programmed to the DTG machine. This makes the printing easy as you only need to press the print button.

After finishing the printing process, use the heat set to cure the garment. Use a silicon paper to protect the design from heat damage. The ideal temperature for the heat press is 330 degrees Fahrenheit and is applied for 90 seconds at light pressure.

This marks the end of the printing process. Your garment is now ready for packaging and shipping.

Signs That Show Your Business Requires a DTG Printer

If your business involves a lot of printing and intricate design, then you should consider purchasing a direct to garment printer. DTG printing will make your work easier and save you the time spent setting up screens. With DTG services, a customer gets their final product in less than a week.

Also, if your customers demand detailed art at low quantities, then direct to garment printing is an ideal option. DTG printing is suitable for small amounts, preferably 24 pieces or less.

DTG printing allows you to keep your working area tidy by avoiding ink spillage. Thus, if your working area is a small room that you don’t want to look messy, then you should consider buying a DTG printer.
