Foreign Office of UK updated the advice of travel for Greece. It has warned that that the jellyfish blooms tend to be reported and also warned that people should heed the local advice.The officials already have issued warnings regarding jellyfish in the coastal waters of Mediterranean for Italy and France.
But marine biologists at local level said that increase this year wasn’t any different from the previous years and also said that blooms had species that were non-stinging.They said they were keeping a close eye at the situation.
One spokeswoman of Foreign Office told,
“We have been alerted to large numbers of jellyfish in the Mediterranean this summer, especially in a number of key holiday destinations for UK tourists. We have updated our travel advice for a number of Mediterranean countries to reflect this issue.”
Also, she added Foreign Office did aim to keep the advice useful and informative for the visitors.
A Global Problem:
The project coordinator of programme of Mediterranean JellyRisk, Stefano Piraino, said that tourists didn’t need to be concerned unduly.
He said that like any other sea or ocean in world, there may be problems and in Mediterranean, it’s lucky that there aren’t deadly jellyfish though, like the other places of world, there was increase in the jellyfish.
Piraino, marine biologist in University of Salento which is located in the southern Italy, told that JellyRisk programme, which involved researchers from Tunisia, Malta and Spain- was established because there happened to be concern about impact of the jellyfish’s increasing number on activities of humans in that region, like tourism and fishing.
He told that main focus of programme was on campaign on citizen science.
Piraino said that it was a very significant tool and that since 2009, tourists, fishermen and sailors etc are asked to send the information regarding jellyfish presence.
This team tends to have developed smartphone application which lets people send information as well as receive the details about jellyfish abundance in that area they visit.
Also, this app provides information that is sound scientifically regarding treatment of stings as jellyfish venom varies depending on species which inflicted injury.
Nets which are anti-jellyfish will be installed at many popular beaches to assess the effectiveness associated with them.
Piraino said that there could be many causes of jellyfish abundance, differing from one site to another and majorly, increased abundance is due to increase in the surface temperature of sea. This comes along with the other things, like the fact that environment of coastal marine was being changed by themselves.
An example that he talked about was construction of the artificial reefs used for the flood defences and which used one material that was favoured by the jellyfish.He also added that it was observed in some European water bodies more often, like North Sea.He said this does place in sea one hard substrate that is preferred for the jellyfish’s larvae stage.
According to him, overfishing was one other contributing factor as people catch all big fish and so competitors are eliminated which leave much food for jellyfish.
One report by UN Food and Agriculture Organization said that increasing jellyfish number created vicious cycle as jellyfish tended to be feeding on larvae and eggs of the fish species commercially important.
In June, the marine researchers got together for the 4th International Jellyfish Bloom Symposium in Japan to share the research on this global problem.
This FAO report says that some experts tend to have warned it, if trend continued uncontrolled, jellyfish would supplant the fish in world’s oceans, giving rise to regime shift globally from fish to jellyfish ocean.
A solution was presented by Piraino, saying that the people need to learn that jellyfish is to be loved.
He said that Chinese were eating the jellyfish from ages and now there’s documented evidence regarding jellyfish which is non-stinging and found in Mediterranean which could be eaten. Also, he said they’re full of the antioxidants and provide molecules which could be used by cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
