With a little knowledge, you can be more confident and ready to start getting the help you need. From a supportive atmosphere to open-ended discussions, your first AA meeting can be a valuable experience.

With the right attitude and preparation, you can learn what to expect and gain the courage to take the first step toward beating your addiction.

Don’t Worry About Dress Codes

At most meetings, people are dressed casually in jeans, t-shirts, or whatever they are comfortable in. The focus of the meetings isn’t on what people look like. It’s more about forming a supportive environment with other alcoholics anonymously.

Work on ways to maintain sobriety. There will likely be an introduction from a leader in the group, who will explain the structure of the meeting, and then people will usually have an opportunity to share their stories and give and receive support.

But, AA recovery earings are now a trend. This might help with the therapy so, make sure to check out these recovery earrings linked here for a wide range of choices today!

Prepare for Self Introductions

It is important to take some time to think about what you can say when introducing yourself. Be prepared to share your experience, strength, and hope. Introduce yourself and state your name, and the amount of time since you last consumed alcohol.

It’s Common to Be Asked and Participate

During the 12 step meeting, you will be asked to introduce yourself or to participate in the discussion by answering or responding to questions. You may also find certain group exercises or activities.

It is quite common to be asked to share, but it is not required, so don’t be afraid to say no if you don’t feel comfortable. All meetings are anonymous and confidential, so know that whatever is discussed will stay in the room.

Listen and Observe

There are no expectations of you to speak or otherwise participate and you are encouraged to observe the others in the meeting who will likely share their stories.

This can often be quite powerful, as many in attendance are struggling with the same or similar issues. The relaxed and welcoming atmosphere promotes sharing and often results in a feeling of connectedness or community.

Be Comfortable

First AA Meeting

It’s important to land in a comfortable, safe space at any meeting. The goal is to allow yourself to take a break from the negative thoughts you may have and to find a sense of peace and relaxation.

Allow yourself to learn from others’ experiences and let them be a source of comfort for you. Relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy the journey.
